I have a desktop computer that i want to connect to my verizon cellphone 2008 LG Dare (I’m paying $40/m) so I can get internet dialup access.
I want to get rid of my landline to save some money( I’m paying $26), drop the dsl( I’m paying $25), and get the Netzero $9.99 unlimited plan.
Verizon just started a feature where they let you add your top 10 most used phone numbers without using your peak minutes so I figured I can add the Netzero dialup numbers and surf the web as much as I want.
Can anyone let me know what hardware I would need to buy and how the connection setup would be done to acomplish this or if this type of setup is possible at all.
Any better ideas for a less expensive home internet connection are most welcome.
Are you trying to pull a fast one here ??!
if you are then chances of success are extremely slim.
1) Dial up access numbers are usually different from normal landline numbers on which the scheme applies.
2) Internet through mobile phones can never match the speed of a DSL connection. The mobile connection will be choppy & unreliable.
3) If you are using a windows mobile device then you can configure internet connection sharing on the phone to browse internet on your computer BUT you will have to pay for the data you surf/download.
4) Calls from mobiles even to free 0800 numbers are charged for the airtime (not for the call)so no question of dialling an access number of a dial up internet connection. You are sure to get a bill going through the roof.
If you want to save money & have a decent internet access then get a pay as you go mobile & dont even think of getting rid of landline telephone in favour of a crappy wireless internet connection through the mobile phone provider.
Another option would be to buy HSDPA mobile internet dongle but again the speed will be no match for a DSL connection & usage will be tightly capped. you will end up spending more than a DSL connection through a landline.
